What is public_html?

Updated on 3 November 2026

public_html is the directory in which the html files that can be viewed publicly (i.e. through the browser) are stored. So if you transfer html files to the server intending these pages to be visible through the browser, you must put them in the public_html directory. If, for example, you create a subdirectory named 'images' in public_html and put a file named 'image1.jpg' in it, you can then see this image in your browser at the address: http://your\_domain.tld/images/image1.jpg Note that if a file is stored in a directory other than public_html, it cannot be viewed. One exception is the www directory, which is the link to public_html. In other words, storing files in www is equivalent to putting them in public_html.
