Publishing your website
Updated on 3 November 2026
Publishing a site consists in transferring its files from a local computer (or from a private test environment) to the web server, so that the general public can reach it over the Internet. Important information about the files of your hosting account: 1. A new hosting account contains configuration files that are needed for your account to work properly. It is important not to delete or move the files and folders that already exist, unless you know exactly what you are doing! 2. Your web pages must be placed in the directory called "public_html" (also named "www", and called "web root" in the file manager). If you use our Website Builder to create your site, your files are placed in the right location automatically. 3. The file containing your home page must be named "index.html", "index.htm" or "index.php". If you use our Website Builder to create your site, the file containing your home page is named correctly automatically.
