How do I publish my files on the server (FTP, File Manager, FrontPage)?

Updated on 3 November 2026

To publish your website, you need to transfer your files to the server. Two important things before you start: 1. Your web pages must be placed in the directory called public_html (also named www, and called web root in the file manager). 2. Your home page must be named index.html in order to be displayed automatically. You can publish your files in several different ways: by FTP (recommended!), with the file manager in cPanel, or through Microsoft FrontPage. 1. Connecting by FTP. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) connections let you transfer files between your computer and the web server. To connect by FTP, you need an FTP client such as FileZilla, which can be downloaded here. Once your FTP program is started, enter the following connection details: * Address/Host/Server: ftp.mydomain.com (replace mydomain.com with your domain name) * User: your username (given in your account opening e-mail) * Password: your password (given in your account opening e-mail) * Port: 21 (the default port in every program) Once connected, transfer your files into the public_html directory. The page index.html (in the public_html directory) is loaded as soon as someone reaches your site; you must therefore replace the file index.html with your own. Any change made by FTP appears immediately on your website. If you do not see your changes, it is likely that: 1. You did not transfer your files into the public_html directory 2. You transferred your files into a subdirectory of public_html 3. You did not overwrite or delete the default index.html file. 4. You did not name your home page index.html 5. You did not refresh your web browser to display the most recent content. We recommend closing your web browser completely and restarting it to see the changes made. 2. File Manager (cPanel). You can use the "file manager" available in your cPanel to add and modify files on the server. Simply click the File Manager button and choose Web Root as the starting folder. Click Upload to transfer your files, one by one, to the server. You can also edit your HTML files directly on the server by selecting your file and clicking HTML Editor or Code Editor. 3. Connecting with Microsoft FrontPage. All our hosting accounts support the Microsoft FrontPage extensions, but they are turned off by default. Please contact our support team to have the FrontPage extensions activated on your account. You can connect to your account with FrontPage using your main username and password. To publish your site with FrontPage, please see the tutorial: How to publish your website with Microsoft FrontPage.
