How do I create and manage additional FTP accounts?
Updated on 3 November 2026
With the control panel (cPanel) you can create additional FTP accounts, each with its own username and password, and each giving secure access to a specific directory of your hosting account. Note that every hosting account already has a default FTP account, whose details are sent to you in your welcome e-mail after your account is opened. How to create an additional FTP account 1. Sign in to cPanel 2. Under the Files heading, click FTP Accounts 3. In the Add FTP Account form, give: 1. Login: an arbitrary username for access to the FTP account. Example: jean89 2. Password: a secure password to connect by FTP (you can click Generate Password to generate a secure password automatically, or choose another one). Example: secur8302 3. Directory: the directory this user will have access to by FTP. This directory becomes the root of the FTP account in question, letting the user reach every subdirectory inside it, but preventing access to any other directory or file. Example: public_html/jean 4. Quota: the amount of data (in megabytes) the user can store on the account in question. Leave it at Unlimited so as not to limit the space available. Example: 100 4. Click Create 5. Take note of the information shown on the confirmation page; you will need it to connect by FTP (the password is not shown). How to configure an FTP account automatically with the FTP programs FileZilla, CoreFTP or CyberDuck (Mac) 1. If you have not done so yet, download and install the free FTP program FileZilla (or another one) 2. Sign in to cPanel 3. Under the Files heading, click FTP Accounts 4. In the Account Management section, find the row of the account to configure. 5. In the Actions column, select Configure FTP Client 6. Click the first link under your FTP program to download and run a script that configures the FTP program with your FTP account. You can also click the Instructions link for additional help. How to delete an FTP account 1. Sign in to cPanel 2. Under the Files heading, click FTP Accounts 3. In the Account Management section, find the row of the account to delete. 4. In the Actions column, select Delete 5. If you only want to remove the FTP access, click Yes. If you also want to delete all the files and directories associated with this account, click Yes & Delete all files in.
