How do I reduce the amount of SPAM I receive?
Updated on 3 November 2026
SPAM (or junk mail) is any unsolicited electronic message, and is therefore considered unwanted.
Although it is hard to eliminate SPAM on an e-mail account, you can minimise its volume and its impact. First, we advise you to: * never display your full e-mail address on your web page, on public forums, or in any other electronic file distributed on the Internet, because it can be picked up by robots and added to SPAM mailing lists;
- Instead, we recommend using contact forms on your sites, and writing your e-mail address in forums like this: user [A] domain.com (instead of user@domain.com) in order to fool the robots.
- Never subscribe to mailing lists without understanding exactly how your e-mail address will be distributed (or even sold!)
- Never reply to an unsolicited e-mail
- Never click links in spam
Then, to reduce the amount of spam received:
- Turn off the catch-all e-mail address in your account. The catch-all option is used to redirect any e-mail sent to a recipient that does not exist on your domain to a valid address. Although convenient, this option can produce a large amount of spam. It can be turned off in cPanel, option Default Email Address, by changing the option Send all unrouted e-mail to Discard with error to sender (at SMTP time).
- Turn on the SpamAssassin anti-spam. With SpamAssassin, each e-mail gets a score from 0 to 10, where 10 = certain spam and 1 = legitimate message. You can then decide to delete every message scoring above 5, for example, or to have such messages delivered to a separate folder. These options are available in cPanel, section SpamAssassin Antispam. We advise you to turn on SpamAssassin and to turn on the automatic deletion of messages with a score above 5.
- Turn on the RBL check, which automatically blocks all e-mails coming from known SPAM sources (often compromised servers sending huge amounts of spam every day). This option can be turned on in cPanel, section E-mail - Spam & Virus Protection. By turning on all these options and taking the necessary precautions, you can reduce the amount of spam received by 90% or more.
