How do I set up an IMAP e-mail account?
Updated on 3 November 2026
An IMAP e-mail account works differently from a POP3 e-mail account, because messages are kept on the server at all times instead of being downloaded to your computer. This can be useful if you share the same e-mail address between several people, or if you travel often and want to keep your e-mails on the server permanently.
The drawback of this approach is that you use more disk space, and the service may be a little slower if you have many e-mails in your account.
To use an IMAP account with a mail program such as Outlook or Apple Mail, you can add an e-mail account choosing the IMAP protocol and giving:
- IMAP server: mail.yourdomain.com (replace yourdomain.com with your domain name)
- Username: your full e-mail address
- Password: the password chosen when the e-mail account was created in your cPanel.
