How do I transfer an international domain name?

Updated on 3 November 2026

A domain name transfer means having a domain name hosted by a registrar or Internet provider other than the one that first registered it.

Transferring a domain name is sometimes a complex operation, because a transfer needs the cooperation of your current registrar, which holds certain information you need. Here are the steps ahead of you.

Step 1: Find a new registrar

You have decided to leave your current registrar. But first, you must find a new one to transfer your domain name to. In your situation, there are two options: find a registrar (an Internet provider that only registers domain names) or choose a web host. In the first case, you cannot host a site, only your domain. This is called "parking", with the possibility of managing your DNS, that is, redirecting your domain to one of your existing websites. And often you will be able to create custom e-mail addresses. In the second case, you will have access to an administration panel to manage your domain name, with: DNS management, creation of e-mail addresses, FTP access to upload your site, database...

Step 2: Ask your former registrar

You have found a new registrar. But you need the help and goodwill of your former registrar. By former registrar, I mean your current registrar, which still hosts your domain name. This step is not always easy.

You must ask it for the transfer authorisation code of your domain, the EPP code. This code is always required to transfer domain names with an extension such as .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, etc.

For .COM and the others, it is the authorisation code that gives your new registrar or Internet provider permission to host your domain name: the EPP code.
